According to questionable Beethoven biographer Anton Schindler, when asked about the trials and difficulties of his only opera, Beethoven replied: “Of all my children this was born in greatest travail”. Bernstein made many of his own alterations to the score for this recording, in both dynamics and orchestration. However, he did not alter any of Beethoven’s original tempos, saying: “...everything leads logically into another entity, which makes sense at its intended tempo ... I am sure Beethoven wrote this way unconsciously. That was how he wanted it, and he was the greatest master of form there has ever been in the world of music.”
