Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

Rec.: May 1985

The creation of these two works spans across the era of what we refer to today as ‘Early Beethoven’ which includes all works up until 1802. The First Piano Concerto, op. 15, was first performed in 1795 and then later revised in 1800 before publication. The history of the Second Piano Concerto, op. 19, is slightly more complex however, we have evidence that suggests that fragments of this work existed as early as the late 1780s, during Beethoven’s residency with the court orchestra in Bonn. We then know that it began revision In 1793, it was then revised again in 1795 and then once again in 1798 and then finally in 1801 before the work was published. At which point he handed it over to the publisher Hoffmeister stating “admittedly, it is not one of my best”. This would ironically indicate that the work we know today as Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, from a chronological standpoint, was in fact his First Piano Concerto.
